There are clear signs pointing to the Department of Justice moving quickly to charge Trump in the classified documents case. Attorney General Garland named a Special Counsel, but he added Jack Smith to existing investigations. Smith is not starting fresh and beginning a new investigation. He is joining investigations that are already in progress.

It looks like Garland wants a decision to be made on Trump quickly before the 2024 presidential campaign kicks into gear.

15 weeks after the MAL search, and months after the crimes occurred, we now have a much-needed fast, tenacious prosecutor assigned to lead the team. The documents case will get charged, and quickly, IMHO. But the clock is ticking in so many ways if Trump is to be held to account.

Times up, DOJ. The rule of law requires Trump be held to account, as others have been for like crimes. It's been over 14 weeks since the MAL search and many months since the DOJ investigation began. Timely action is needed. https://t.co/1IjDVrUUWt

An ongoing DOJ investigation of Trump during the primary could be viewed as giving Trump an unfair primary advantage with Republican voters, as the former president will be able to play the victim and argue that he should be nominated because the Justice Department is out to get him.
