The national sales tax bill appeared to come out of nowhere, but it is an idea that has been kicking around the Republican Party for decades. I have been covering presidential campaigns since 2004, and the national sales tax has come up in at least one open Republican presidential primary debate since 1996. Funny enough, incumbent Republican presidents who are running for reelection don’t advocate raising taxes on every American.

Kevin McCarthy had to make all sorts of promises to get elected speaker, but the national sales tax might be his most damaging to the entire party.
