Kevin McCarthy Blames Everyone But Himself For Debt Limit Fiasco
Speaker Kevin McCarthy managed to blame President Biden, the entire United States Senate, and even Nancy Pelosi for his debt limit debacle.

Kevin McCarthy Is Starting To Flail
Kevin McCarthy was asked by NBC News’s Garrett Haake about Biden’s offer to reduce prescription drug costs and this was the exchange:
McCarthy: How can the White House be interested in that when they said you can't touch Medicare or Social Security?
Haake: You don't think there are savings to be had there?
McCarthy: No, remember what the president said?
Haake: So that's a cut in your view.
McCarthy: The president said you can't --
Haake: I'm asking your opinion.
McCarthy: Okay. I understand. But I've got to be clear. The president said you can't do anything with Medicare Social Security and now he wants to bring that into the fold. We all heard that from all the people across the country over and over.

McCarthy was just getting warmed up.
He also blamed the Senate, “The Senate hasn't done anything. And so we're sitting communicating working together, and they're just now coming up with the idea of freeze.”
McCarthy also blamed former Speaker Pelosi, “There was an outcry, but the outcry was, the speaker was different. It was Speaker Nancy Pelosi…There was an outcry, but the outcry was, the speaker was different. It was Speaker Nancy Pelosi. You can read her quote. What did she say? She simply said no debt limit will get increased without first negotiating to spend more money. The difference then is, it’s what the Democrats always say. The Democrats think you should spend more money. We have spent too much, and in that place where President Trump had to negotiate with Speaker Pelosi and they spent more money, we voted to make sure to make it happen.”
Kevin McCarthy Is Blaming Everyone But Himself
The seeds were planted for this crisis when McCarthy surrendered all of his power in return for being speaker. The current mess isn’t the fault of President Biden or the Senate.
The problem is that Kevin McCarthy is too weak to get a deal through the House, so his only option is to hope that Democrats bail him out of his own incompetence. Kevin McCarthy is playing hostage taker because he is the true hostage. If he doesn’t do what the far right of his caucus wants, they will remove him from the speaker position and end his career.
So if America defaults and millions of jobs vanish overnight, there will be one person to blame. It won’t be Joe Biden or Nancy Pelosi. It will be Kevin McCarthy.

You are absolutely right, Sarah and Jason. Kevin McCarthy is solely responsible for this "debt crisis". There was no pressure from any Republican caucus other than the MAGA dominated one, and as you say, the Speaker traded his authority to them in January.
The extent of control the MAGA extremists hold over this Speaker is unprecedented. Every decision he makes is subject to their approval, because every day they have enough votes to bring him down. The only way to break this cycle of inter-dependence is to get there first: remove him and elect a moderate Republican Speaker.
(I represent a network of ordinary citizens who have been opposed to Kevin McCarthy becoming Speaker since early last December, and have been working to see him replaced ever since. We are urging both moderate Republicans and Democratic leaders to take this step. You can learn more here: https://www.FeathersOfHope.net )
When this is all over and the dust settles, Mr. McCarthy needs to be held accountable for the damage done. In the meantime, since he can't deliver 218 Republican votes for any negotiated compromise, only a bipartisan majority can pass a debt ceiling increase. And the only way a bill to do that can come to the floor without the Speaker's approval is with a Discharge Petition.
Democrats are united in supporting the Discharge Petition, meaning only 5 or 6 Republican need to sign on. There are certain moderates who are under growing pressure to break ranks and prevent catastrophe. So if anyone reading this wants to do something more than just talk about it, call or write to the following Republicans urging them to sign the petition:
John Curtis (UT-3), Ashley Hinson (IA-2), Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1), David Joyce (OH 14), Victoria Spartz (IN-5), Don Bacon (NE-2), Mike Gallagher (WI-8), Andrew Garbarino (NY-2), Nancy Mace (SC-1), Dan Newhouse (WA-4), and David Valadao (CA-22)
