Republicans have been trying to kill PBS for years. They see no value in an educational television service that is free to the public. As a presidential candidate in 2012, Mitt Romney suggested that Elmo was a mooch who should not be getting taxpayer money, and vowed to kill PBS if he became president.

Every time Republicans have had control of any part of the federal government, they’ve come after PBS.
The closest that PBS came to real danger was in 2017 when Republicans controlled both Congress and the White House. Trump proposed killing PBS by privatizing it, but the public outcry against it was so great that the GOP had to back off.
With Republicans back in the House majority, they have once again turned their attention to PBS.
