The moment that Kevin McCarthy officially became the Speaker of the House should have been a time of celebration for Republicans, but the sense on the House floor despite the applause on the right side of the aisle was of exhaustion and defeat.
The energy and momentum for the entire week had been with the party that was now going to be in the House minority. It was Democrats who were upbeat and celebrating their new leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
As Republicans grew increasingly grim with each passing failed vote, Democrats were enlivened. House Democrats were energized by the Republican failure.
